Batman Beyond #8

batman beyond

A bit late with the review on this one for a couple of reasons, but moving on. This issue marks the last Batman Beyond comic before September's big relaunch and reboot. Even though BB will be in the new canon, I have no idea when the next issue will come out.

Follow up:

The cover itself is fairly mediocre, the composition is kind of boring and a bit all over the place. There is nothing really dynamic about it, since the fight isn't front and center, and neither is Inque's face. And like the cover suggests, the issue is all about Inque.

Rather than continuing the storyline about Max and Undercloud and Dana and her brother, this issue actually goes back to Hush Beyond with Cadmus labs, as well as Inque's origin story. In the cartoon, Inque (as well as most of the villains, really) never had her origin story revealed. She was a cold, calculating and smart mercenary and thief who could morph her body much like Clayface, but not change her color. In this issue, we learn exactly where she comes from.

It turns out Inque was originally a refugee smuggled into Gotham to work in the sex industry, but escaped and ended up homeless, and to make money subjected herself to scientific experimentation. This experimentation turned her into what she is. The issue also goes back to the cartoon, and incorporates the storyline with Deanna, Inque's daughter. Overall, I have to say this was a really strong issue, and turned one of new Gotham's most vicious villains into a truly sympathetic character--a woman determined to define a new future for her daughter at all costs. The art was pretty good too, I always like when they switch the penciller, considering the default guy's art is just terrible. I will make one complaint over Inque's human form, instead of making her still seem made out of some inky substance, she was drawn and ended up looking more like a person with the wrong colors on her body.

I have no idea what the reboot will mean for Terry's story, but I will say that they ended the old run on a real high note, proving Beechen, while lousy at over arcing plots, is brilliant at character studies.

Welcome to Nerdvana!

This blog is all about me, Bwillett, and the struggles of the daily life of a struggling comic artist and college student. In addition to being an artist and student, I also happen to be an comic book nerd, gaming freak and hardcore Otaku. The title is a reference from the Big Bang Theory, one of my favorite shows.
