Breaking news in the world of anime. Giant struggling company and long-time anime fan advisory 4Kids Entertainment has lost their rights to Yugi-Oh as well as several other of their properties. Allegedly, 4Kids has been defrauding and holding back royalties from TV Tokyo and Nihon Ad Systems, and have had their licenses revoked, as well as being sued by the Japanese companies.

So what does this mean? This is both horrible and great news for the anime community. On one hand, this means that effective immediately all broadcast, merchandise sales and DVD sales of Yugi-Oh, Yugi-Oh GX, Yugi-Oh 5DS and the other effected properties must cease. This could possibly include the card game and the manga. It's hard to say yet. But on the other hand (until at least this mess is settled) 4Kids no longer has the rights to Yugi-Oh, which could potentially mean that another, better company could gain the rights. While this probably won't mean a new dub, but the potential for an unedited sub release from a new company could arise. Or the rights get swallowed up into the great licensing black hole that exists for the Sailor Moon anime and Cardcaptor Sakura. It's hard to say just yet, we'll have to wait and see.
