Bad Anime Day

With my internship over I can finally start going to my anime club again at the college and yesterday was a perfect time to go back as it was BAD ANIME DAY!!! Bad anime day is just like it sounds, we intentionally watch really really bad anime to make fun of it.

Follow up:

The first thing we watched was Armegeddon, a Korean animation produced by the Daewoo company--yes the same Daewoo company that produces cars and DVD players. As on that premise alone you can tell it's going to be bad. The animation wasn't all that bad, when it was original animation, but for like twenty minutes of the movie there was recycled footage, and the pacing was really awful you had *no* idea what was happening for the entirety of the film. All I could catch was that it involved space dinosaurs, computer gods and a Korean He-Man knockoff with a Mullet. It definitely made my head hurt.

But the piece de' resistance was the second movie: Voltage Fighter Gowcaizer, easily the most laughably bad anime I have ever seen in my life.

So why is this the Manos Hand of Fate of anime?

Where to begin? The movie seems to almost be a parody of Saint Seiya except it takes itself very serious. The plot, as such as one can surmise, is that brilliant students excelling in various fields from academics to marshal arts all go to the same high school, yet strange events seem to begin when a new student is transferred in. Then there is a plot line about the headmaster of the school, who simultaneously is the good guy and the bad guy, giving out items called Kaiser Stones that can amplify a person's strengths to make them super warriors with tricked out armor and new haircuts--but apparently robs them of their clothes because whenever they finish battling they end up naked (there is quite a bit of nudity in this movie, both male and female--which is odd because it's really not an ecchi). Oh yeah, and a side plot about an incestuous brother/sister pair. But at least they tell you drugs are bad!

While the character designs are actually pretty bishi, the animation is awful, with the characters looking really warped every few scenes, to a point where the eye facing away from the audience ends up bigger, as opposed to smaller with proper perspective. So it sorta looks like most of the characters have a squint like the Sea Captain from the Simpsons. Yet, despite the inability for the characters to look normal for more than 30 seconds, the animation is very smooth and consistent when it comes to showing off panty shots and breast jiggling, because you know you can't call yourself an animator if the breast jiggle isn't consistent.

In addition to English dub is awful. The main character is voiced by the same guy who planned Bandit Keith in YugiOh. Say it with me everybody!

IN AMERICA!

All the acting is really flat, but I don't suspect that the Japanese version is all that much better, as lots of the dialog is really, really stupid. Now, for an action movie such as this was supposed to be, that isn't that big a deal. But for 15 minutes one of the characters explains (or, at least tries to explain) the backstory of the villains and the Kaiser Stones. Du du du du EXPOSITION! At the end of his little monologue the main characters are like 'oh, I totally understand now!'--well, that's more than I can say for myself, pal, all I got was a headache.

And did I mention the fan service? Yet despite all the nekkid' women in the movie, the dialog contained so much homoerotic undertones that it made a Yaoi look subtle.

"You have to have so much passion that you could seduce a nun"

*cuts to scene of a naked man asleep in the main character's bed with his back to him*

*headdesk*

And that was only one of about 20 moments like it, not to mention you have not one, but two male characters with pink hair, including one with a lovely green manicure.

So in short, Voltage Fighter Gowcaizer has horrible animation, tons of fan service, dialog that will induce a brain hemorrhage, Bandit Keith as the hero, an impossible to understand plot and male/male scenes that would make a Slash writer blush. This movie also happens to be directed by the same person who directed the Fatal Fury movies

Terry Bogart! Terry Bogart! Teeerrry Booogart!

So naturally I enjoyed every moment of it XD

Welcome to Nerdvana!

This blog is all about me, Bwillett, and the struggles of the daily life of a struggling comic artist and college student. In addition to being an artist and student, I also happen to be an comic book nerd, gaming freak and hardcore Otaku. The title is a reference from the Big Bang Theory, one of my favorite shows.
