Okay, finally finished watching Kuroshitsuji. And it's hard to say what I make of the ending. On the one hand, it was sorta inevitable that Sebastian would take Ciel's soul, but on the other the ending felt really well, anticlimactic, slow and disappointing. There was sort of a lot of false hope that this thing may have had a happy ending, after all, Sebastian said he wasn't really interested in consuming souls anymore, just interested in Ciel, and the way Ciel died and that last journey was kinda, well, pointless. I think I'd be happier to actually see Sebastian eat Ciel's soul and do something with the body, as opposed to it just about to happen. Or show if the servants actually died. I hate when you don't even have a vague idea of what happens to characters. Because when it finally ended my thought was 'this is it?' It's one thing to leave things open ended, it's another to leave things clueless. Which is probably this show's biggest problem, you had no idea what was going on for a lot of the series.
The pacing for this show is a nightmare. After the second episode nothing significant really happens until Pluto appears, and then the dolls and then nothing until episode 17, which leads to a ton of stuff happening that doesn't quite clear up until the last 3 episodes. And I hate when shows do that. There were also some filler episodes--which weren't bad, but when you're dealing with a mystery is the stupidest thing to do ever. As a horror show it's very good, but as a mystery show it's quite terrible. And I wish there was more comedy, even in the last episode. So between the animation, the music, the characters it's very good.
Though after a little research the problem seems to be that the Manga hasn't ended yet, which never seems to lead to a satisfying anime ending. With the pacing, inconsistant storytelling and slow (and depressing, not sad, just depressing) ending, it's sorta 'meh'. Overall I give the series a B- It's certainly not going to knock out any of my favorite series, but if I saw it discounted somewhere I probably would buy it.
